Michael Carmody announced his retirement yesterday after a 44-year career in the federal bureaucracy.
He has led Customs for 6½ years but is best known for his previous role, a 13-year stint as the nation's taxation commissioner.
Home Affairs Minister Jason Clare paid tribute to Mr Carmody last night, saying he was a giant of the public service.
''Michael Carmody's intellect, capacity and decency will be sorely missed by all in the Commonwealth public sector,'' Mr Clare said.
Mr Carmody was made an officer of the Order of Australia in 2005 for his work in tax administration. One of his deputies at Customs, Michael Pezzullo, will lead the agency until the next chief executive is appointed.
