Finance Minister Penny Wong has announced her partner Sophie Allouache is pregnant.

Senator Wong said in a statement that the child was due in December.

''Like any expecting parents, the prospect of welcoming this child into our lives fills us both with joy,'' she said.

''We are extremely grateful to our IVF service and staff, and to our donor, for giving us the opportunity to raise a child together.

''The biological father of the child is known to us, and will be known to the child. We have agreed with him that his name will not be released to the media.''

Seantor Wong said she had chosen to make the statement because she understood there may be public interest due to her position.

''This is, however, a very private matter and we ask for our privacy to be respected during this time. I do not propose to make any further statements following today,'' she said.
