The raid last week was in relation to stories in 2017 based on leaked Defence papers that alleged Australian soldiers may have carried out unlawful killings in Afghanistan.

Some 65 people gathered outside Mr Fletcher's electorate office in Lindfield, on Sydney's upper north shore, on Tuesday afternoon calling on him to protect press freedom.

The rally was organised by an alliance including members from ABC Friends, the Labor Party and the Greens.

"The coalition has shown they have total contempt for the ABC, they've cut it, they've intimidated by political interference, and now we see this," ABC Friends spokeswoman Janine Kitson told AAP.

"This is a message. They're telling us, if you don't behave yourself, this is going to be the law - and we're not going to accept it."

Protesters signed an open letter to Mr Fletcher calling on him to reassure the public he will "uphold and protect journalistic freedom and citizens' right to information".

The ABC raid and another at the Canberra home of a News Corp Australia journalist "reveal an utter contempt for Australia's democratic values," the letter states.

"They were clearly designed to intimidate Australia's cherished public broadcaster, the ABC, and its journalists."

The letter asks Mr Fletcher to table a ministerial statement which demonstrating the federal government's support for media freedom and apologises to the ABC.

It also calls for a review of all legislation using the terminology "national security" to threaten the right to information in the public interest.

Greens Senator Mehreen Faruqi told the rally the raids were "dangerous and scary tactics".

"Whether or not they were designed to do so, their result is the intimidation of whistleblowers, journalists and news organisations," Ms Faruqi said.
