The mathematics behind social distancing

As we continue to batten the hatches in response to the coronavirus threat, we have all become familiar with the term "flattening the curve". Most of us have seen illustrative curves and have a grasp of the concept. And in particular, we accept the need to flatten the curve to control the spread of the virus, which we are told is best achieved by "social distancing".
