A would-be thief who tried to steal a car was thwarted by leaving the handbrake on, police say.

About 8.30am on Saturday, a man got into a black Mazda that was left by the owner in a Barrier Street car park in Fyshwick with the engine still running, police say.
The owner confronted the man before he drove away with the handbrake still on. The car's rear tyres blew out in Ipswich Street.
The man abandoned the vehicle and drove away in a silver Hyundai iLoad van.
