The home affairs minister accused Queensland Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk of playing "State of Origin nonsense" by keeping the state closed to greater Sydney.

Mr Dutton said the decision was having dire health and economic impacts and diverting precious police resources.

"We've got the police in a situation where you've got homicide detectives or detectives from the child abuse unit who are manning roadblocks with northern NSW," he told 2GB radio on Thursday.

"Those cases that they should be investigating aren't being investigated.

"There are crimes being committed that shouldn't be committed, because police are distracted by this."

Mr Dutton did not provide any evidence to substantiate his claims.

Ms Palaszczuk has said she will not make any decisions on reopening the Queensland border to greater Sydney or Victoria before the end of the month.

Mr Dutton said state border closures did nothing to protect people from coronavirus.

He said banning travel from China early in the pandemic and closing the international border altogether were the key reasons for Australia's success in managing the disease.
