There is speculation the government could put a brake on the super guarantee, which is due to increase on July 1 from 9.5 per cent to 10 per cent and then incrementally rise to 12 per cent over the next few years.

The timetable is under review with an announcement expected in the May 11 budget.

A number of business and financial peak bodies have argued increases in employer super contributions often mean employee salary and wages increase at a slower rate.

AFL viewers on Friday night were shown ads featuring people talking about how they would have to work longer, retire with less or sell their home if the government messes with super.

It builds on a social media campaign that has been in market for four weeks and has targeted pre-retirees in key geographic locations.

Treasurer Josh Frydenberg recently said the system could be more "flexible" if retirees drew down on their savings more efficiently.

"Workers should know that when politicians start using the words flexibility and efficiency, they mean they want to cut your super leading to retirees having to sell their home," Industry Super Australia chief executive Bernie Dean said.

Recent research showed two-thirds of Australians support the rise going ahead as planned.

Meanwhile, the tax office says there is $13.8 billion in lost and unclaimed super waiting to be reunited with Australians.

Workers may have lost or unclaimed super if they have changed their name, moved jobs or changed addresses, or forgotten to update details with their super fund in the last few years.

The lost super can be found via the MyGov website.
