United lost to Croatia last week 3-1 and sit three points behind but are not giving up the tussle for the premiership just yet.
Tuggeranong United FC bore the brunt of Belconnen's quest, yet clawed back a goal of their own by Sarah Daisley off a set piece.
United coach Paulo Romero gave some insight to the score line, with their striker Sophie Bui putting on the gloves for the match.
"It was nice to get something out of the game, it was always going to be hard," he said.
"We're basically missing every keeper we have at the club. We would have used our 17s keeper, she was away, the reserve keeper is injured and our first grade keeper is away as well.
"So the keeper that went in is actually my number nine, my striker. So credit to the girls, they went out and they gave it all could."
In the end, Leah Carnegie's hattrick, Talia Backhouse's duo, Olivia Bomford's one, captain Michaela Day's one, Reilly Yuen's one and an own goal led to the score line.
Belconnen coach Michael Zakoski said his side had no plans to let off the pursuit for first place, and were conscious it may come down to the goal tally.
He said the way they planned to do that was by finding their consistency again after their loss to Croatia last week.
"[Croatia's] our bogey team this year, we just can't seem to beat them at the minute but we're working hard to try and keep it consistent each week," he said.
"We feel like the consistency over the season is important, so we're trying to treat every game as important as that one."
Belconnen picked up W-League player Tiana Jaber in the mid-season transfer window and Zakoski said her recruitment led to more competition for spots.
"There's now some of the more established players feeling like their spot might be up for grabs," he said.
"So it brings more competition to the team, which hopefully brings more results to the field ... that's what we want."
Croatia face Wagga City Wanderers FC today and a win will secure them the top spot for another week. Belconnen will have one more chance to shake Croatia off the top when they square off again in round 19.
The loss leaves Tuggeranong in last place, but Romero said he was proud of his side's effort to secure their first point against Canberra United Academy two weeks ago.
"I was really happy with the girls, we actually played a new formation that day, which we worked at in training," he said.
"The girls did really well at training with it, so we tried it out and it paid off. We should have won that, I was disappointed that they got one back but it is what it is, it's football."
