* Dominic Perrottet - the treasurer and deputy NSW Liberal leader has long been touted as Berejiklian's most likely successor, but is yet to put his hand up to be premier. The 39-year-old father of six on Saturday said he had been speaking with his family and colleagues and had received "some strong feedback". The member for Epping was first elected to parliament in 2011, is backed by former prime minister John Howard, and is the only prospective candidate from the party's right faction.

* Rob Stokes - the planning minister is so far the only person to formally throw their hat in the ring. Stokes, 47, has represented the seat of Pittwater on Sydney's northern beaches since 2007, and on Saturday argued he possesses "the right balance of experience, vision and integrity" needed to assume the role at such a pivotal time.

* Mark Speakman - the attorney-general is also canvassing support from his colleagues, saying he is "heartened by the encouragement" he has received, and will declare his intentions on Sunday. Speakman, 61, was the force behind the state's historic sexual consent law reform, announced earlier this year.

* Stuart Ayres - the jobs and tourism minister and Penrith MP is also considered a contender. Also the minister for Western Sydney, if voted in as state Liberal leader the 40-year-old would be the first for his party from the area.

* Andrew Constance - if the transport minister does nominate himself for the top job, he will be the longest-serving candidate and the only one from the state's regions. The 47-year-old member for Bega has held an array of portfolios - including industrial relations, finance, disability and ageing - but is also reportedly considering a venture into federal politics.
