Former karting star Zach Bates, 17, will hit the track in Sydney in the first of four key motorsport events aligned with the Supercars calendar, including the Mount Panorama classic at Bathurst in December.
This weekend, he will line up against 20 others, all driving identical Toyota 86 sports cars, for the three races at the Sydney Supernight Supercars event at Eastern Creek raceway.
In the following weeks, he has two more Eastern Creek appointments, racing both the 86 and his Formula Ford open wheeler.
As well as leading the national 86 series following three wins from three starts on the Townsville street circuit three months ago, he only has to win one more race to secure the NSW Formula Ford title.
The Year 11 Canberra Grammar student has been homeschooling over the ACT lockdown period and honing his race skills on a race simulator at home.
When the lockdown lifted, he was able to gain some valuable practice time at at Wakefield Park circuit near Goulburn.
