Club probe fans who wrecked VAR in Brazil

A video review had led to the penalty that gave Palmeiras their equaliser in first-half injury-time. Palmeiras scored again in time added on to take the lead and sealed victory with a goal in second-half injury-time.

That third goal came after another VAR intervention ruled out what would have been a late equaliser.

Three supporters broke the monitor, its protective casing, and ripped off wires feeding into the set. Fans of the Porto Alegre club also damaged post-match interview paraphernalia and reportedly destroyed photographers' equipment.

The Globoesporte portal said that fans also fought with police and away fans after the final whistle on Sunday.

Gremio said in a statement it "does not agree with the acts committed by a small portion of the fans in attendance to yesterday's match." It added it was cooperating with police and considering banning the guilty supporters from its home matches.

Ronaldo Botelho Piacente, procurator-general of Brazil's Supreme Court of Sporting Justice, said an inquiry could lead to Gremio being fined up to 100,000 reais ($A23,456) and forced to play as many as 10 games behind closed doors or at an alternative venue away from Porto Alegre.

"This will be investigated," Piacente told O Globo. "The intention is that Gremio will lose their home rights."

The crowd trouble at the modern Gremio arena occurred even though stadiums in Brazil are still only allowing a limited number of fans due to concerns about the spread of Covid-19.

Gremio are 19th in the 20-team league and in relegation trouble - the bottom four go down and they are seven points adrift, albeit with games in hand.

Four years ago they won the Copa Libertadores, the premier South American club competition, for the third time.
