Queanbeyan Racing Club chief Brendan Comyn is hopeful his annual Cup meeting will retain its showcase status after a bumper event on Sunday which dished out more than a quarter of a million dollars in prizemoney.

It was the first showcase meeting the club had hosted after being bestowed the honour in August, and attracted almost 2000 spectators while generating an estimated $1.2m in betting turnover.
"We really think after four years that we were well and truly deserving of a showcase meeting at Queanbeyan because that prizemoney obviously gets you great fields all day and we get a good response," Comyn said.
"It's gone as well as could be expected. Everyone was telling me 'You're going to get washed out'. Drizzle and rubbish in the morning doesn't inspire people to go to the races and stand outside all day, but for what the crowd was it was quite good so we're very happy."
Wagga seven-year-old Zakeriz stole the show in the $45,000 Queanbeyan Cup as country jockey Nyssa Burrells collected her biggest win since waking up from a coma less than four years ago.
Local mare Look Only won the flagship Thunderbolt Handicap (1000m), while there was on-track drama in the Class 3 Showcase Handicap (1460m) when Choccy Gaf was first past the post, only to lose the race on protest to Departing Bullet in the stewards' room.
Crucially for Comyn, the track held up superbly after recent rain and ominous grey clouds which circled region all weekend.

"We were very happy the way it was racing, they were not getting into it very much and they were coming from everywhere, from behind, or whether they were leading," Comyn said.
"We copped a few scratchings, but never mind, that can't be helped.
"Everything went off pretty smoothly. The bars were exceptional and we even managed to have a little bit left so the bloke that does the ordering of the stock did a great job.
"The kitchen sold out everything bar a few sausage rolls so that was good. Overall it was a very successful day."
