ACT Fire and Rescue responded to an automatic fire alarm at the building on Tuesday morning.
Upon arrival firefighters located smoke within the building.
The source of the smoke was confirmed to be a burnt-out air conditioning fan motor.
The building was evacuated, with all people directed away from the building as a safety precaution.
ACT Policing and hazmat crews cleared the safety of the scene and handed the site back the Australian War Memorial staff.
ESA said there was no active threat to the community.
