The incident is alleged to have happened early Monday in the wake of his side's 2-1 loss to Napoli.
Local media reported that 15 fans showed up at Zaniolo's home at around 1:30 am, threatening him with death over expressing his desire to leave the Serie A club in the winter transfer window.
The incident comes after Roma coach Jose Mourinho voiced criticism directed at Zaniolo.
"Unfortunately, what I said after Spezia seems to be coming true," Mourinho said at a press conference on Saturday.
"If a player always tells everyone he doesn't want to wear the Roma shirt, I have to say 'unfortunately', I said that I expected him to stay, but today I add 'unfortunately'," he added.
Zaniolo and Roma need to agree terms on a move before the winter transfer window closes on Tuesday. Otherwise, he remaisn in the Italian capital until the end of the season.
