A 12-year-old girl has faced children's court charged with the fatal stabbing of a woman in a Footscray apartment on November 16.

Her lawyer said detention at a juvenile centre was "inappropriate" due to the raft of challenges faced by the child including intellectual disabilities such as autism, ADHD and anxiety.
The defence will seek bail while finding the girl a safe housing arrangements and provide her with secure welfare.
The girl asked "where am I going?" as the magistrate handed down his orders.
She will remain in custody and be assessed for further requirements until her next hearing on November 24.
Emergency services were called to the Royal Hotel accommodation on Barkly Street in the west Melbourne suburb of Footscray just before 2am where a 37-year-old woman was found dead.
The girl was arrested at the scene and taken to hospital for assessment under police guard before being charged with one count of murder.
