A woman was driving along Tumbulgum Road, Murwillumbah in NSW's north east at 8.50pm on December 10 when a white sedan with a blue flashing light began to pursue her.
She pulled to the roadside believing it was a police traffic stop.
But the 'officer', dressed in a light blue button-up shirt with a navy zip-up windcheater, dark pants and blue gloves, was not who he appeared to be.
He allegedly assaulted the woman by "sexually touching" her when she complied with his instruction to leave the car.
The man is described as "being of Caucasian appearance, aged 35 to 45, of medium build".
He had dark hair, cut short on the sides and longer on top, and had facial hair stubble.
His alleged crime was reported to police after the encounter and an investigation was launched by Tweed and Byron police.
Several cars are believed to have driven past during the alleged assault and those witnesses were urged to contact police.
The community is reminded to ask to see a badge or identification documents before following instructions from police.
Anyone with concerns about being stopped can contact their nearest police station to verify their identity, but if concerned, contact Triple Zero (000).
