Three other people are said to have been injured and two others are missing.
The accident took place on Sunday afternoon in Val d'Enfer near the Mont Dore ski resort, which is at an altitude of between 1200 and 1846 metres.
The regional newspaper Midi Libre reported that the victims were skiing at the time of the avalanche.
Rain might have caused the disaster, having put a strain on the snow cover that had formed in the hours before, the newspaper reported, citing a specialist.
Bad weather has made the search for those missing difficult.
The mountains in the region, many of which are of volcanic origin, are not as high as those in the Alps or Pyrenees further south but can be highly remote with extensive snow cover.
