We've got some good news today, with Phoenix Mapham found safe and well.

It's also the last day of winter, which is a good sign for some (I like the cold though). We're in for a top of 13 degrees, with some showers.

Let's have a look at what's making news today:

Missing for seven days, six-year-old Phoenix Mapham was found by ACT Policing late on Thursday afternoon, outside Hoskinstown in NSW, which is east of Carwoola.

His mother Tessa Woodcock was found nearby and arrested and will face charges related to the unlawful taking of Phoenix.

Late on Thursday ACT Policing said Phoenix would be taken to the ACT to be reunited with his father, and would undergo medical checks.

It's the last day of winter and while for most people that's an exciting thing, I'm getting pretty anxious about spring and my allergies!

The Bureau of Meteorology is predicting a hot and warm spring after we only had half the usual winter rainfall.

"Those conditions we've seen basically since the start of the year are likely to continue," climatologist Felicity Gamble said. "We're seeing another dry season."

And if you've been thinking that it doesn't feel that warm yet, you'd be right - Thursday morning was the coldest August morning in the capital in four years.

I've been covering this story for a while and it's a complicated one, but to be quick: internal documents show the ACT government knew it was facing increased demand and pressure on its visa program in April but didn't do anything about it until June.

The program was closed for most applicants at the end of June and hundreds of heartbroken students will protest outside the Legislative Assembly this afternoon.

This is a worry. Non-friable asbestos (that means it's less likely to break up into small pieces) was found in some garden beds at Harrison School, and although the school is remaining open, the area has been cordoned off.

The Canberra Liberals have blasted the government over the way the issue has been handled, with concerns about safety at the school. An angry Education Minister Yvette Berry told the gathered media the issue was being dealt with properly.

This makes me wish I knew some children in Canberra so we could play shops in the cutest little cafes and market stalls I have ever seen.

Partners Michelle Templin and Colleen Cooper are making the Raw Range of play pieces out of their Fyshwick warehouse - it's only been eight weeks but people are going mad for them.

The range, made out of recycled pallets, are proving so popular the pair are going to move to fully concentrate on them instead of their main line of business, which is importing cubbies.
