A Queensland gambling survey has revealed 24.7 per cent of adults used electronic gaming machines in 2016-17.

That was a drop from 29.6 per cent in 2011-12.

However, last year, Queenslanders lost a record $2.34 billion to the pokies, and almost $4 billion to all forms of gambling.

The survey of 15,000 Queensland adults found 29.2 per cent had not bought lottery or art union tickets, placed a bet or used electronic gaming machines last year, up from 26.2 per cent five years earlier.

Lottery products, including the lotto and scratchies, were the most popular form of gambling with more than half of the adult population having bought them in the past year.

Overall, about 12.3 per cent of Queenslanders had gambled using the internet, including online poker or horse racing.

There was an increase in sports betting, from 5.1 to 6.9 per cent.

But sports betting was split along gender lines, with men (11.8 per cent) much more likely to have a punt on a match than women (2.3 per cent).

The 18-to-34 age bracket had the highest participation rates for playing the pokies, casino table games, betting on sporting events, playing card games privately for money and betting on elections, TV shows or other novelty events.

Participation in Keno was higher among those aged 35 to 54.

Participation rates also varied according to people's highest level of educational attainment.

For example, people with a university or postgraduate degree were significantly less likely to play the pokies or Keno than people with lower levels of education.

Attorney-General Yvette D'Ath said it was encouraging to see the percentage of problem gamblers had remained stable over the past five years at 0.51 per cent, the second-lowest rate in the country.

The percentage of recreational gamblers decreased, but the moderate risk gamblers increased from 1.9 to 2.5 per cent.

Ms D'Ath said at risk gamblers would be a key focus of the government's election commitment of a revised framework to address problem gambling.

"Many of us enjoy a flutter from time to time, or buy a weekly lottery ticket, and for the most part, this is harmless fun," she said.

"We will continue to work with industry to ensure the small number of problem gamblers get the support they need."

Among low and moderate risk and problem gamblers, the most commonly reported problems were betting more than they could really afford to lose, going back another day to win back losses and feeling guilty about gambling.

Almost all problem gamblers had experienced gambling-related health problems and about three-quarters had experienced financial problems associated with their gambling.

The Queensland Household Gambling Survey was axed by the LNP, with the last survey held in 2011-12.
