Canberra Times Fun Run: Father-daughter duo bond over running

Instead, this year he's lacing up his runners alongside 11-year-old daughter Ava to complete the Canberra Times Fun Run.

Having moved to Canberra almost a decade ago, the father of two started running seven years ago.

"I thought it was time to do something about my fitness, but also health as well," he said.

"I was conscious that the older I get, the harder it is to stay fit. But also I wanted an opportunity to go out there and live the outdoor lifestyle."

Myles-Abadoo has completed 5-kilometre, 10-kilometre and 14-kilometre runs, along with a half marathon which he did last year.

This year as he started his training, daughter Ava took a keen interest in running. The year 6 student already has a full schedule with gymnastics, dance, basketball and acrobatics, but wanted to add running training with her dad to her schedule.

"My Dad said it's really fun and also I like being really fit," she said.

"Sometimes I just sleep in but now I just want to go out for runs because it looks really fun."

The father-daughter duo have been spending quality time together training for the event, particularly during the recent school holidays, with dad passing on his tips on breathing, cadence, timing and pacing.

Ava is already comfortably running the 5 kilometres that they'll do at the fun run on September 4, which will be her first big race.

Ava said she is "nervous but really excited at the same time," about the big day, and already has her eye on running longer distances in the future.

"Ava is especially keen on the atmosphere of people cheering you along and helping you over the line and all the high fives – that's pretty special on the day," Myles-Abadoo said.
