A low pressure system hanging off the coast of south-east Australia brought the first snowfall of the year to the ACT last Friday, May 11, turning Namadgi National Park into a winter wonderland.

Across the border in NSW, Thredbo Ski Resort received 27cm of fresh snow between May 10 and 13, while Perisher got about 20cm as temperatures plunged to -4 degrees.

Both resorts are still planning to open the slopes on June 9, with Perisher already firing up the snowmaking guns in preparation for the winter.

"We will be making snow at every opportunity now as we head into our opening day," Perisher sales and marketing manager Richard Phillips said.

"We are closely watching the weather forecast and are hopeful of good snowmaking conditions and more natural snowfall."

Festivities won't just be confined to the slopes, with Perisher to kick the season off with the four-day PEAK Music Festival, which begins on June 8, a day before the slopes open.

Thredbo's opening weekend party starts on June 9, headlined by its Villlage Square Concert.

The resorts aren't likely to see much fresh snow over the next week, with the Bureau of Meteorology only forecasting a late snow shower at Thredbo on Friday.

Forecaster Anita Titmarsh said the temperature would fall as low as -3 degrees, with any snowfall to pale in comparison to last weekend.

"It might get a bit of a dusting, but we're not expecting a big dump," she said.

Meanwhile, the ACT is set to continue its descent into winter temperatures over the next week.

The mercury is predicted to fall to around freezing point in each of the next seven days, with highs between 16 and 18 degrees.

"We've got a big high pressure system bringing stable, dry conditions to Canberra at the moment," Ms Titmarsh said.

"It will definitely be cold, but we're not forecasting any snow in Canberra itself over the next week."
