This year, there have been more than 1135 development applications lodged to the planning and land authority and more than 930 applications were decided. Of the decisions, about 700 were lodged this year. The others were lodged before January 2018.

From re-purposing buildings in Greenway to a multi-use development taking over a city car park, here are some of the notable developments set to change the face of the capital.

For JW Land's Founder's Lane precinct in Braddon, the developers plan another 207 apartments to join the already approved 329 apartments of the development.

The first two stages of the precinct is expected to be finished in late 2019. The development on the former public housing block is bounded by Cooyong Street, Ainslie Avenue and Currong Street and is 25,631 square metres.

A development application for stage three for an additional 207 apartments is being considered by the planning directorate. Stage four is yet to come.

The whole development will have 700 apartments.

A multi-use development with up to 1200 apartments across four buildings is planned to take over a car park in Canberra's city centre.

Barry Morris's Morris Property Group lodged an application for works approval for the first stage of the massive new apartment and commercial development at City Hill.

The estimated $500 million development, designed by Sydney-based architects FJMT Studio, will be built in four stages. The first will focus on the section bounded by Vernon Circle, Edinburgh Avenue and an extension to Knowles Place.

The Alexander and Albemarle buildings in Woden are set to undergo a "re-birth", almost a decade since the site was last used.

The two buildings, connected by a low-level structure, have sat vacant for eight years, but instead of demolishing the towers, Doma Group said it planned to transform, preserve and re-purpose them into "airy textural warehouse and loft-style apartments along with diverse non-residential uses".

The towers were built in the mid-1960s by the Commonwealth and were home to the Health Department. Doma Group bought the site in 2010, and in recent years it has sat fenced-off, heavily vandalised and boarded-up.

A multi-storey mixed-use commercial and residential development is proposed to take over the vacant block at the Campbell shops.

The development proposes for commercial and residential use - a mix of 19 apartments and townhouses and three commercial tenancies.

The development is estimated to be $7.8 million.

Another re-use of older buildings in Canberra.

Construction of a $200 million aged care facility is underway in the buildings that were once home to the Department of Social Services.

The approximately 60,703 square metre site off Athllon Drive, Greenway includes five sets of two buildings.

The development of the 10 buildings, a joint venture between the building owner and Love Decency Kindness Healthcare, will "re-purpose" the office space creating up to 380 serviced retirement apartments. The company will also operate the facility.

After almost a decade of planning, construction of Stromlo's $36.6 million leisure centre has dived into action.

Plans for an indoor pool at Stromlo have been floating around since at least 2010. In 2016, Deputy Chief Minister Yvette Berry announced the government would set aside $33 million for the pool in the 2017 budget.

It would include a 50-metre lap and competition pool, a program pool for activities like swimming lessons and aqua aerobics, a reception, kiosk, administration offices and change rooms.

As well as the eight-lane lap pool, the leisure pool will be more than 200 square metes in size and include a toddlers pool.

Another development for Woden.

Geocon's controversial Wova development in Woden has been given the green light, with the construction of the 24-storey marker building to begin next year.

The $400 million Wova is four buildings, with about 800 apartments, on the former Woden Tradies Club site, which Geocon bought last year for $16 million. The existing hotel building and club will be demolished.

A multi-unit retirement village is planned for the former site of Higgins Primary School.

The school, preschool and baby health centre were demolished in 2015 following a 2014 ACT government announcement on plans for "big changes" to the site and Higgins Oval.

The development will have 48 single-storey townhouses, 52 apartments split across two buildings - one four storeys and the other five storeys - over basement parking and a central clubhouse.

Canberra property developer Geocon plans for a hotel at Garema Place.

Earlier this year, Geocon lodged an application for a five-star hotel in the heart of Canberra city. It originally planned for 233 suites across 16-storeys that would rise 50 metres.

However, it was amended following concerns of overshadowing. The new proposal reduces the height from 50 metres to 35.2 metres and drops the number of hotel rooms to 191, including eight "superior rooms".

Another Doma Group development.

Earlier this year, the first stage of Doma's $160 million DKSN precinct on the old Dickson motor registry site was given the green light.

It will be home to public servants, with 96 one, two and three-bedroom apartments as well as restaurants and commercial spaces.
