Developers Village Building Company revealed plans in December to build 180 townhouses as well as 60 apartments, 11 houses and five apartment blocks on the site.

However, nearby residents of the six-hectare site have said the development would create traffic chaos in the area, with the density being 10 times that of other parts of Weston.

The opposition to the proposal, outlined in community forums earlier this year, has forced the developers back to the drawing board.

Revised plans for the development are expected to be published on Monday, with pre-development application community consultation extended to August.

Weston resident and founder of the Save Weston group Josiah Plowman said the influx of new townhouses and apartments in the area would create congestion around Heysen Street, where entrances to the complex are planned.

"There's major traffic issues already around the area," Mr Plowman said.

"It's very dangerous as it is with residents in nearby streets struggling to get out of their driveways because there's so much traffic in the area, and with the development in Molonglo, many are using Weston as a bypass to get to Woden."

While the area has been marked for development for several years, Mr Plowman said original plans for the area had an aged-care facility being built on the site.

He said the apartment blocks would create strains on existing infrastructure in the area.

"Everyone mentioned it was going to be developed, and we have no objection to houses being built there. We just want our existing community respected," he said.

"We want to see single-dwelling blocks and separate houses and an overall lower density of the entire development."

Weston Creek Community Council chair Tom Anderson said while he is concerned about the density of the site, he isn't entirely against development in the area.

"The jury is still out until we see the full plan. I'm not against it going forward, but I want the outcome to be a good outcome for the area," he said.

"The biggest issue is the apartments. If they weren't there, the development wouldn't be as sensitive."

The Mr Anderson said the developers have met several times with the council to discuss concerns with the site, with further discussions scheduled for later this month.

While Mr Anderson said residents expected an aged-care facility on the site, the site was rezoned as a medium-density residential site in 2008.

In a statement on its website, Village Building Company said issues raised by residents are being taken on board.

"Village will liaise with relevant agencies and community stakeholders to ascertain any reasonable measures that they can additionally incorporate into the development and likewise respond to community concerns," the company statement said.

"We will continue to update...with further information including updates on the community consultation process going forward, FAQs and other relevant documents."

Existing buildings on the site have been demolished, with construction to go ahead from early 2019 if the development is approved.
