Insurance claims from drivers who have collided with wild animals in Queensland have risen 25 per cent in a year, a national insurer says.

And winter months have the highest risk for motorists, according to NRMA.
NRMA data has shown several hot spots for animal and car collisions in Queensland, leading to a spike in insurance claims.
The NRMA has seen a 25 per cent increase in claims from Queensland from 2016 to 2017, particularly across the winter months.
Kangaroos are the most likely to be involved in a road accident, followed by dogs, wombats, cattle and cats.
NRMA Insurance research director Robert McDonald said early mornings and late afternoons were the highest risk times, with animals often appearing unexpectedly or jumping out in front of cars.
Goondiwindi, St George, Warwick, Cunnamulla and Stanthorpe were reporting the highest number of collisions across the state.
The RACQ has also seen a spike in claims, reporting a 7 per cent rise in claims for crashes involving animals.
“Our data shows the cooler months are a peak time for these types of crashes, so as we head into winter we’re pleading with motorists to be on high alert," RACQ spokeswoman Kirsty Clinton said.
More than 10,000 claims made to the RACQ over the past three years were for collisions with animals.
June to September were the busiest months last year, with more than 1000 claims made each month.
“If you’re driving in an area where animals could be present, slow down and take note of any signage about local wildlife,” Ms Clinton said.
“Avoid driving at dawn and dusk when animals are out foraging. With less green grass available in winter time, animals are often seen on the roadside looking for food."
