Brisbane City Council put forward a major amendment to the Brisbane City Plan 2014 on Tuesday, following recommendations from Brisbane’s Future Blueprint.
As part of the amendment, 57 pre-1911 and heritage properties will be protected.
These new properties will join the 400 buildings already protected and recognised for their significance.
The views of Brisbane’s skyline from well-known landmarks including ANZAC Square, Post Office Square, the General Post Office and St Stephen’s Cathedral will also be protected.
The council’s City Planning chairman, Matthew Bourke, said views of our city’s iconic landmarks have helped to shape Brisbane as the city it is today and the changes to the City Plan would help preserve Brisbane’s heritage places, as well as their landscapes and vistas.
“Great civic spaces, such as Reddacliff Place, Post Office Square and ANZAC Square are the gateways to many of our city’s public institutions and historic buildings, and represent everyday places where people can gather and take pride in our city, just as the iconic sightline between Central Station and St Stephen’s Cathedral contributes to our identity,” he said.
“These changes to City Plan will require the highest level of assessment under strict provisions for future proposals on these sites, with development limited to prevent any permanent buildings being constructed on these sites or where they would block their view.”
The amendments will be opened for public feedback before they are formally implemented into the Brisbane City Plan 2014.
