Owner Carolyn Kerr made the announcement on the business's Facebook page, saying after fighting off several investigations, she did not have the strength or money to pay for a Fair Work Commission audit sparked by another anonymous complaint.

In late October and early November last year, the shop came under intense scrutiny after a campaign against the Innisfail business erupted on social media.

Ms Kerr blamed several not-for-profit organisations for the shop's closure but The Red Heart Campaign, an anti-domestic violence group at the centre of last year's controversy, said it had "nothing to do" with it.

Ms Kerr said she was closing the doors "with great sadness" after buying the abandoned butcher's shop off Gumtree, renovating it and converting it into a fish and chip shop.

"As many of you know, I have been the subject of an abusive witch hunt by a not-for-profit organisation, more than one, who are anti-abuse," she said.

"They are threatening to throw bricks through my window, they complained to ASIC to have my business name revoked. I got through that one.

"Then they complained to the Industrial Relations [Commission] and Child Protective Services, that by employing kids I was participating in child exploitation. But I jumped through that hoop, that was the Friday before Christmas.

"Last week I was informed that anonymous complaints were made to the Department of Fair Work, who are now acting on it and doing an audit on my business for my staff wages.

"I believed that I had audit insurance, like every small business should have, but I was informed this morning it only covers tax audit and not Fair Work.

"I don’t know how much the accountant is going to cost me to get the information together to jump through the hoops. I just don’t see any way that I can trade my way through it."

Ms Kerr said an injury to her shoulders and back she suffered during the renovations was not healing as it should and her doctor told her this was due to the stress and workload.

"So, who wants to buy a shop? It’s called The Battered Wife Fish & Chips. You don’t have to name it that but this is what you are going to get," she said.

The Red Heart Campaign had called for people to boycott the business, writing "there is nothing funny about domestic violence or violence against women".

On Tuesday, The Red Heart Campaign founder Sherele Moody responded to the shop's closure.

"I have been blamed for the closure of a business today," she wrote on Facebook.

"The business owner's post means people from the angry troll brigade are bombarding me with the usual shit.

"Yes! Last year I called the business out for its name which mocked domestic violence victims. No! I did not ask my friends to abuse the business.

"The owner of the business published a video today in which she said that Fair Work Australia is investigating her wage payments and that she was closing as she had not purchased audit insurance.

"I had nothing to do with someone else's bad business decisions or an investigation into tax fraud and wage theft."

State politicians previously denounced the name of the shop, which has the motto "The only battering anyone need know".

But Ms Kerr, a former police officer who had seen many examples of domestic violence before becoming a victim herself, said on Facebook last year the issue was not a joke.

She told media at the time she understood the controversy the name would create when she chose it but claimed it would bring awareness to the "very real problem" in society.

"There's no way that I took it in light, that I was promoting domestic violence like all these keyboard warriors they're carrying on about," she said.

Katter's Australian Party member for Hill Shane Knuth said the shop's name drew unfair criticism, much of which he said was from outside the region.

"This sucked in the Premier [Annastacia Palaszczuk] and Opposition Leader [Deb Frecklington] into making ignorant comments, without taking the time to actually investigate the circumstances behind the name," he said.

Ms Frecklington said it was distressing when businesses closed.

"I feel for the owner of that business, times are tough in many of these small country towns across Queensland, including my own community of Kingaroy," she said.

Ms Frecklington defended her comments in October, when she said the name was "totally inappropriate".

"In a press conference very similar to this I was asked what I thought of the name, The Battered Wife, and in the context of anything being called the "battered wife", I am a very staunch advocate against domestic violence," she said.

A GoFundMe campaign has been launched to support Ms Kerr ahead of the shop closing its doors.
