The 50-year-old, who lived with his wife and daughter in Logan, was abseiling at Mount Barney, about 90 kilometres south-west of Brisbane, on Saturday when he fell about 300 metres.

His body was recovered on Sunday afternoon.

Mr Turner hosted school groups and guided tours in rock climbing, abseiling and mountain climbing from Mount Barney Lodge for more than 15 years.

“He had an amazing passion for the outdoors,” Lodge owner Innes Larkin said.

“He had climbed Mount Barney probably more times than me, and that’s a few times ... I’m talking in the hundreds.”

Mr Turner ran an adventure company, had performed rescues in the area and had climbed in Nepal.

Mr Larkin said Mr Turner was able to lug heavy packs and had been known to run back up mountains to retrieve people’s lost items.

“If there was one person I would send a group off knowing I feel safe and that the group was going to come back in any difficult times it was Steve Turner,” he said.

“He inspired many people to achieve what they thought they couldn’t.”

Mr Larkin said an event would be hosted at Mount Barney Lodge in memory of Mr Turner.

Police said Mr Turner somehow became detached from his rope while he was abseiling.

The cause of the accident was still unknown but a report would be prepared for the coroner.
