Critical care paramedics were called to Point Lookout just after 10am on Monday morning.
A rescue helicopter was also called to the drowning, which a local lifeguard said happened near Adder Rock and Flinders Beach, but no patients were taken to hospital.
The Bureau of Meteorology had issued a hazardous surf warning on Monday for Gold Coast waters, including Cylinder Beach.
Paramedics were unable to confirm the man's age.
The drowning came two months after another man died after being pulled from nearby water at Frenchman's Beach.
A report will be prepared for the coroner.
Correction: An earlier version of this article incorrectly stated the man drowned at Cylinder Beach.
