Yet still, the lifelong Taralga farmer initially had no intention of driving to Goulburn on Friday to pick up his share in 200 tonnes of hay that was donated to the region's farmers.

"I wasn't going to come, only a mate talked me into it," Mr Menzies said as he waited at Goulburn Showground to collect his hay from the Rapid Relief Team, a charitable arm of the Plymouth Brethren Christian Church.

"It means a lot, but we feel very guilty coming here to pick up even a few bales because there are a lot more people out there on a lot more property who probably need it more than us.

"Anything in the drought is a big help, though, no matter what it is."

Mr Menzies was among dozens of farmers who lined up at the showground on Friday morning to collect hay and chat to fellow graziers over a barbecue.

He said the opportunity to get off the farm and have a conversation was just as welcome as the hay.

"We'll talk about the things that make you forget about the drought, and that's politicians and kangaroos," Mr Menzies said with a laugh.

Rapid Relief Team director Ron Arkcoll said the charity had raised more than $3 million for drought relief in the last four weeks.

So far, it has bought more $1.5 million worth of hay to distribute to farmers throughout NSW.

The Goulburn hay donation was the Rapid Relief Team's fourth so far in the drought-stricken state.

"We're distributing 450 bales of hay [that were] purchased in Tasmania, loaded onto a barge and ferried across Bass Strait [to Victoria]," Mr Arkcoll said.

"[It was] loaded onto 13 semi-trailers and trucked into Goulburn for the farmers.

"Today, it's all about giving help and hope to our farmers."

Braidwood farmer Mark Horan said the eight bales of hay he received would probably feed his cows for a little more than a day.

Mr Horan has worked every day this year, constantly driving back and forth to Victoria to source feed for his stock.

"What it means is that I can have a day off," he said.

"We've been working seven days a week since the beginning of the year and it doesn't end. They're long days.

"To get a little bit of hay to give you a little bit of comfort [and allow you] to spend a bit of time with your family is quite a wonderful thing, actually."

Member for Hume Angus Taylor, who lives on a farm near Goulburn, praised the Rapid Relief Team for its work to benefit farmers.

He said he had lived through droughts since the early 1970s, but had never seen one this stressful for farmers.

"We have had tough droughts in the past, but what we haven't seen is a situation where farmers are having to make what I believe to be the toughest financial decisions that I've seen in my lifetime," Mr Taylor said.

"We know that at the back end of this drought we're going to see record stock prices, so the decisions farmers are making right now ... are enormously stressful ones."

While NSW remains 100 per cent in drought and tough times lay ahead, farmers like Mr Menzies still choose to be optimistic.

"I've never met a drought that didn't break, mate," he said.

"How high's a mountain when you can fly like an eagle? That's the way you've got to look at it."
