The court, acting as the Court of Disputed Returns, ordered the Australian Electoral Commission to do the recount last Friday, but the results were not made public until a short hearing in Brisbane this morning.

Now that Mr Smith has been declared elected, he must wait until the next Senate sitting day to be sworn in. Due to Senate estimates, this is not until June 18.

The recount follows the High Court ruling that Katy Gallagher was not eligible to be elected as a senator as she was still a British citizen at the time of the 2016 election.
