Queensland government minister Coralee O'Rourke diagnosed with breast cancer

Ms O'Rourke, the Labor member for the Townsville seat of Mundingburra, said she would take time off over the next few weeks to spend time with her family and work with her medical team to undergo treatment and recover from surgery.

"After that, I plan to face this challenge like most other Queensland women with breast cancer do - by continuing to get on with my work, which I love," she said.

"I know I am incredibly fortunate to do this with the unwavering support of my colleagues, particularly the Premier and Deputy Premier, who I thank for their kindness over the past week."

Ms O'Rourke learned of the diagnosis last week, a week punctuated with emotion as MPs exercised their conscience vote during the debate on abortion reform.

Her diagnosis comes during Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

Every week, 343 women in Australia are diagnosed with breast cancer.

"I hope it serves as a reminder to all Queensland women to remain vigilant regarding their health and get regular scans," Ms O'Rourke said.

Ms O'Rourke is the Minister for Communities and Disability Services and Minister of Seniors.

Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk said Ms O'Rourke advised her as soon as she had the diagnosis.

"I have been working with her and we have advised all of the caucus members about the process that she will now go through," she said.

Ms Palaszczuk urged any women with concerns to see their doctor for a check-up.

"Coralee went to her doctor and then she immediately went and had further testing and she is having the surgery straight after that," she said.

Ms Palaszczuk said she would appoint a current minister to act in Ms O'Rourke's portfolios while she was on leave.
