Queensland senator Fraser Anning was slammed for attending the far-right rally in Melbourne's St Kilda on Saturday, for which he is charging taxpayers close to $3000 for his return flight and government-provided car.

The senator has insisted he was representing his constituents on the interstate trip, as “African gang violence” was “rapidly spreading to my own state”.

"We have seen violent assaults and carjackings by African criminals in Annerley, Rocklea, Yeronga and Greenslopes," senator Anning said.

But Queensland Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk said there was no African gang problem in the state.

"The Police Commissioner (Ian Stewart) has advised me that there are no such types of instances happening here in Queensland," she said.

"He [Anning] is wrong, pure and simple.

"We actually believe here in tolerance and respect. We believe in a harmonious, multicultural Queensland and a multicultural Australia."

Politicians from both sides of the political spectrum on Sunday criticised Senator Anning's presence at the rally, where some attendees were seen making Nazi salutes.

Federal Labor deputy leader Tanya Plibersek, former prime minister Tony Abbott, acting Prime Minister Michael McCormack and Prime Minister Scott Morrison - through a statement released on Monday - were among those to criticise the senator's actions.

Ms Palaszczuk said he should not have gone to the rally or charged taxpayers for the trip.

"I think that Queenslanders have a great opportunity at the next election to dump Senator Anning," she said.

"It is absolutely abhorrent and disgraceful to think that in this day and age, a senator representing Queensland would attend a neo-Nazi rally."

Ms Palaszczuk, of Polish descent, said her grandparents came to Australia after War War II.

"My grandfather went through the horrors of World War II, as did my grandmother," she said.

"Nazism has no place in a civil society.

"Everybody should be calling this out, every single member of the Federal Parliament should call this for what it is.

"It is absolutely disgraceful in this day and age that there would be any kind of Nazism appearing here on Australian shores."

Senator Anning, who last year used the Nazi-associated term "final solution" while praising the White Australia policy in his maiden speech in Parliament, said his presence at the event was not an endorsement by him of the views of other speakers or attendees.

"I didn't see any people there who appeared to be radicals," he said

"There were no skinheads, just ordinary working people who'd had enough."

Senator Anning claimed people performing Nazi salutes were "far-left extremists", despite images showing otherwise.

LNP deputy leader Tim Mander said Senator Anning's comments about "African gang violence" were inappropriate.

"Most people would see these type of rallies as being totally inappropriate," he said.

"An elected representative, in my opinion, shouldn't be there, and I think he needs to seriously consider repaying that money."

Charging taxpayers for the flights, he said, did not "pass the pub test".

"Queenslanders can be comforted that only 19 people voted for Fraser Anning, and let's hope he gets a lot less than that at the next election," he said.

"At best, he's shown very poor judgement, at worst, he's supported racist comments."
