A driver caught with a dog on their lap while using a mobile phone has been fined.
Police said the driver - whose sex or age would not be released by ACT Policing - was pulled over on Coulter Drive, Belconnen about 4.55pm.
According to police the driver had a small dog on their lap and was driving with one hand while using a mobile phone.
The driver was slapped with fines for using a hand-held mobile phone and driving with an animal in lap totalling $670 and lost three demerit points.
"Police would like to remind all drivers that road safety is everybody’s responsibility and that anything a driver does that takes their attention away from the road could have tragic consequences for all involved," police said.
Driver distraction is any action that takes a driver's attention away from the road and onto other elements in their environment.
This includes using a mobile phone, driving with head phones, tuning a radio, managing children or pets on board, or applying make-up.
