A 67-year-old woman has died and a 67-year-old man has head and back injuries after they were hit by a car south of Brisbane.

The woman suffered critical injuries when struck by an SUV while crossing the road at traffic lights at the intersection of Browns Plains Road and Downing Street, about 7.45am on Thursday. She died at the scene.

The man was taken to Brisbane's Princess Alexandra hospital in a stable condition for non-life-threatening injuries.
The driver of the SUV, a 28-year-old woman from Parkinson, was not injured.
Diversions were in place after the accident, with people urged to avoid the area.
The Forensic Crash Unit was investigating.
