From Friday, Department of Veteran Affairs white card holders will receive a 50 per cent discount on public transport fares across the state, bringing them into line with concessions for current gold card holders.

About 35,000 veterans who hold gold cards can already access public transport discounts.

Most white card holders, who previously did not receive cheaper public transport, were under 64 years old and had sustained an injury or a condition from their service.

Everyone aged 65 years and older, and working fewer than 35 hours a week, can receive transport concessions in Queensland.

Transport Minister Mark Bailey said extending the concession was a Labor election commitment.

"This is an opportunity to acknowledge the service of our veterans by extending travel concessions to those who may not currently receive them," he said.

Fare concessions are also available for students, seniors, pensioners, asylum seekers, people with a disability and their carers.

"We want to ensure public transport is affordable for all Queenslanders, regardless of their personal circumstances," Mr Bailey said.

White card concessions will apply on TransLink bus, rail, tram and ferry services, regional Qconnect bus services and approved regional ferry services.
