Recently-elected Katter's Australian Party MP Nick Dametto, whose party supports changes to firearms laws, put on his own gun show, posting a photo of himself flexing in the parliamentary gym.

In an Instagram post, Mr Dametto wrote "Parliament House gym looks a lot like a mine site gym but empty".

The member for Hinchinbrook also posted an #elevatorselfie from the Parliament lift, showing his reflection with a gym water bottle under his arm.

On his Instagram page, Mr Dametto, who ran a jetski tour business before winning a seat in the November election, wrote: "As the Member for Hinchinbrook I will continue to post pictures of this crazy life, never change and remember who you are."

Mr Dametto's commitment to fitness prompted LNP member for Kawana to post his own photo from the gym.

But it soon prompted a social media war, with Labor's Mark Bailey firing up Twitter to write "Mimicking the Katter Party huh? No wonder they hold more North Qld seats than the LNP these days."

Mr Bleijie shot back with "As Shadow Education Minister I'm encouraging kids to get off their smartphones and live a healthy life. Come to mention it I've never seen you in the gym. Try it, u may like it. I guess the only work out u get is your thumbs with all your twitter trolling."

Labor member for Bancroft Chris Whiting then joined the fray, showing he was a supporter of "middle-aged men in lycra".

Speaking of which, Mr Bailey was also showing his enthusiasm for cycling last week.

Mr Bleijie was not the only LNP politician to be hitting the gym over the summer break, with member for Broadwater David Crisafulli posting a photo with a dilapidated medicine ball.

Ferny Grove MP Mark Furner showed Labor MPs were not just cycling fans, hitting the weights over summer.
