The last time most Canberrans saw Michael Turtle it was probably when he was wearing a suit reporting the news for ABC-TV.

That was way back in 2002-2004 and things have changed for him just a little since then.
He worked for the ABC and Channel 7 in Sydney and then started travelling in 2011. And hasn't stopped since. He's lost count of the number of countries he's visited but it's around 70 to 80 and he's made return trips to many.
Turtle, 38, said he started travelling because "there was more to life than just a daily routine".
"I thought I would find it personally stimulating to always be in new places, meeting new people, and learning about the world," he said.
The other reason to hit the track was to further his career, if not reporting from outside the Assembly and the local courthouse, but from the most beautiful and interesting places on the planet. He's paid his way writing a blog, through his writing and photography, and by tourism consulting.
"I have always loved storytelling and any job has constraints about the sort of stories you can work on," he said.
"So I wanted to have the opportunity to write the articles that I thought were interesting and be able to discover new stories as I travelled."
The good news for travel-bug Canberrans is that Turtle will be writing a weekly travel column for The Canberra Times, starting in this weekend's Panorama.
"I'm really excited to be writing for Canberra. My first real job in journalism was in Canberra and it was where I learned the importance of community," he said.
"I've always found that people are so interested in more than just their own lives - they want to hear about the wider world and all the fascinating things that are happening in it."
