The Digital Portraiture Award was established in 2012 to support the growth of digital portraiture, focusing on "screen-based narratives and digital technology".
The winner of the 2017 award, was mixed media installation Selfie Factory by Ralph Kenke and Elmar Trefz.
It employs a real-time stream of Instagram selfies printed on receipt paper, showing in a tangible way the scale of the selfie phenomenon.
While at the gallery, the selfie factory will be printing for 15 minutes at a time during the exhibition at 10.30am, 1.30pm and 3.30pm.
If you use the hashtag #selfiefactory on Instagram you will jump the queue and see your images printed ahead of plain, old #selfie.
The artists received $10,000 and a professional development residency at The Edge, State Library of Queensland.
Ralph Kenke was in Canberra to receive the award. His co-creator, Elmar Trefz, was there in spirit. He was in San Francisco but posted a selfie using #selfiefactory, the image printed during the proceedings.
The Digital Portraiture Award 2017 will be on display at the National Portrait Gallery until February 18.
