Police are investigating after multiple shots were fired into a property on Burgoyne Street on Sunday.

Local resident Tim, who asked his surname not be used, was asleep when he woke to what he thought was "five shots in quick successions" about 6am.

"It sounded like an automatic weapon - I thought, that's definitely a gunshot," he said.

"I went back to sleep and forgot about it and then in the morning my wife told me police set up a crime scene and they marked all the different bullet shells on the road."

An AFP forensics team attended and examined the scene.

"You often hear a noise and you sort of wonder 'Oh was that a gun' and you sort of move on," Tim said. "But this sounded more like a gun, more than anything I've heard really.

"It's disturbing actually, to have that happening around the corner."

Tim who has lived in the area for about six years said even though "there's a lot of activity in our street, because of the housing density, but that's certainly the first time I've heard of a shooting in this suburb."

"The shootings seem to be happening more and more in Canberra in the last couple of years and this one is right around the corner so it's pretty scary."

Police said they did not believe the incident was outlaw motorcycle gang related.

They urged anyone with any information to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

The investigation is ongoing.
