The coolest part of Tuesday was 9am at 21.6 degrees but it got warmer, peaking at 33 degrees, and there was little relief as night fell, with an overnight low of 24 degrees recorded around 6am Wednesday.
Tuesday's minimum temperature, technically at 9am, was the third hottest December low since records begun in 1940.
The warm conditions will continue on Wednesday, with a top of 29 degrees expected.
Senior climatologist at the Bureau of Meteorology Agata Imielska said cool winds were expected later in the afternoon or early evening but temperatures would still feel quite warm for most of the day.
The mercury was expected to drop to 23 degrees at 8pm, getting down to 18 degrees by 11pm.
While there were low chances of rain on Wednesday, there was a higher chance on Thursday, which is forecast to reach just 19 degrees.
Friday is expected to see a top of 21 degrees and an 80 per cent chance of rain.
"If you're looking for clear conditions, that's possibly the least attractive day of them all," Ms Imielska said.
Those heading outdoors on the weekend will be in for mixed weather, with clouds and a top of 27 degrees on Saturday followed by 22 degrees on Sunday and possible showers.
