The local match reportedly left players with concussions, broken collarbones and a possible back fracture before being called off.
The Star Weekly is reporting South Morang assistant coach Jim Chetcuti as saying the umpires had lost control of the game and fights were breaking out.
"Our coach called it off because of the loss of control by the umpires and the physicality and the unfair way [Sunbury] were playing," he said.
"We've got nine girls with serious injuries … concussions, broken collarbones and a potential back fracture, all from rough play," he said.
But Sunbury coach Kerry Saunders reportedly said her players played hard, fast football, but had done nothing wrong.
AFL Victoria's football operations department is looking into why the match was cancelled and is speaking with representatives of both teams.
Officials from both clubs have been contacted for comment.
