Landscapes were a study in monochrome as the white-out caused visibility to drop to between 100 and 200 metres across the territory.

Weatherzone.com.au meteorologist Anthony Duke said the fog formed about 3am as temperatures dipped to minus 3 degrees and made way for clear, sunny skies about 10.30am.

"Clear skies towards the end of Friday and light winds created perfect conditions for the fog to form," he said.

"It was mostly freezing fog which means if anyone was out and about it would be leaving a layer of ice on lamp posts."

Canberrans could expect more of the same on Sunday, when the likely morning mist likely could cause flight delays from the capital's airport. But it should clear about 11am.

While the mercury could dip as low as 0 degrees, sunshine and clear skies would see temperatures reach a maximum of 13 degrees.

Mr Duke said maximum temperatures for the past seven days were an average of 1 degree below the monthly long-term average.

Tuesday's maximum temperature was four degrees below average, which contributed to the coldest start to August in the ACT in five years.

Last week's 33 millimetres of rain meant the capital had already been doused with 70 per cent of the month's average rainfall of 45.7 millimetres.

Weather conditions would remain steady until extra cloud brought showers and a cooler maximum temperature of 9 degrees on Wednesday.

"There's no end to winter in sight yet," Mr Duke said.
