Queanbeyan City Council welcomes new general manager Peter Tegart

After one-on-one meetings with councillors in his first two days on the job, he said he could see the advantage of having a new general manager heading the council.

Mr Tegart said he hoped the councillors could "start afresh", and drive forward with the current delivery plans.

While the incoming general manager denied any division within council, he said one of his initial aims was to improve communication between the councillors, staff and the community.

"There are a number of things we've started to look at," he said.

"The way we report to councillors to help them make informed decisions, the way we keep councillors updated and informed on what's going on," he said.

Mr Tegart said he doesn't intend to make too many changes prior to the announcement of the Fit for the Future initiative in October. The local government overhaul could see a merger between Queanbeyan and Palerang councils, despite both recommending to remain separate.

In the meantime, the council will continue with prioritised actions, including the Ellerton Drive Extension and the CBD work, identified in the delivery program and operational plan, Mr Tegart said.

"The reality is we're in the final year of a current council term, we're going through the process with state government through the whole reform of the local government sector, so it is quite likely there may be some changes to that vision and how we roll that out as a result of the next 12 months," Mr Tegart said.

"We expect when that [Fit for the Future] comes out at the end of October, in the last part of this calendar year we will be starting to make some decisions and announcements."

Getting off on a good foot with the community, Mr Tegart described Queanbeyan as "a very exciting place to be at the moment".

After many years living and working in south-east NSW, including a stint as the general manager for Bega Valley Shire Council, he said he looks forward to learning more about the ins and outs of Queanbeyan.

"It is too early for me to start to have any say, or think about what my personal vision is, but it will certainly be in line with what the councillors want."

He has replaced acting general manager Hugh Percy, who replaced former general manager Gary Chapman when he resigned in September 2014.
