The man, 37, was struck by a silver Ford Fairlane sedan as he crossed Newcastle Street around 12.30pm.
The impact lifted the man over the car's bonnet and his leg was badly injured, police said.
The driver of the car didn't stop at the scene of the incident.
However, the 53-year-old NSW motorist from NSW later went to Woden Police Station and is helping with the investigation.
Police have released images of a dark-coloured Holden Commodore ute and would like to speak to the driver, who they believe could have witnessed the incident.
Any other witnesses have been urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or at act.crimestoppers.com.au.
