The fixed camera at the corner of Northbourne Avenue and Antill Street caught the most speeding drivers for the second year running.

It recorded 5097 speeding fines for the year ending February 28, swelling the government's coffers by $1.27 million.

On average, speeding fines issued to Canberrans were $249 each.

Canberra's top five most effective speed cameras were the same as in 2014, as residents continued to drive illegally in the same areas.

The red light camera and speed camera at the corner of Northbourne Avenue and Antill Street remained the most profitable.

The fixed camera on the Barton Highway between Curran Drive and Gold Creek Road came a close second.

It issued 4944 infringement notices between March 2014 and February 2015, raising $1.17 million for the territory's coffers.

Another Northbourne Avenue red light and speed camera, at the intersection with London Circuit, raised the third highest amount, $885,913, in the past year from 3369 infringement notices.

A speed camera at the intersection of Hindmarsh Drive and Ball Street was the highest earning camera in Canberra's south, issuing 3569 infringement notices in 2014, equivalent to the fourth largest amount, $838,080.

Finally, another Barton Highway fixed speed camera located between Gungahlin Drive and Ellenborough Street caught 2838 Canberrans driving illegally, raising $653,449 in revenue.

ACT government data revealed revenue from fines issued by speed cameras fell by more than $2 million during the year, from $11.48 million to $8.97 million.

In the same period, the number of fines fell substantially from 47,900 in 2013-14 to just 36,034.

The new data comes only two months after the ACT opposition called on the government to release an expert review into the placement and effectiveness of Canberra's speed cameras.

The review looked at point-to-point and fixed cameras and considered how slowing drivers could cause accidents around speed cameras.

Minister for Justice Shane Rattenbury said research showed even a small reduction in speed could result in fewer deaths and injuries and ACT speed cameras helped achieve that.

"ACT Policing reports that speeding was identified as a contributing factor in 13 of the 41 fatal crashes which occurred between 2010 and 2013 ... the impact of these crashes could be reduced or in some cases avoided altogether through a reduction in speed," he said.

Mr Rattenbury said every year the government spent significantly more on road safety than the amount collected from infringement notices.
