NSW Roads and Maritime Services workers would start to lay skid-resistant asphalt, install guardrails and clear trees and vegetation on the side of the highway to improve visibility on Monday, Monaro MP John Barilaro said.

"Skid-resistant asphalt will be placed at six separate sites on Clyde Mountain to provide a safer road surface and improve ride quality."

The road resurfacing should be finished by February 18.

"Work will also start on Monday to install guardrail at 16 locations between Batemans Bay and Bungendore to reduce the severity of crashes for vehicles which leave the road," Mr Barilaro said.

"Work to reduce roadside vegetation will also be carried out during this time between Batemans Bay and Clyde Mountain."

That work will be carried out on weekdays between 7am and 5pm and was expected to continue until the end of April, depending on the weather.

"Motorists should plan their journey and follow the direction of traffic control with reduced speed limits in place for the safety of workers and motorists," Mr Barilaro said.

Monaro Country Labor candidate Steve Whan this week said the NSW government had "dropped the ball" on funding for upgrades to the highway and said vital safety improvements to the road had stalled.

It prompted NSW Roads Minister Duncan Gay to hit back at Mr Whan's comments and insist projects on the notorious stretch of road were under way as planned and would be finished on time.

Mr Barilaro said the $1.7 million upgrade to get under way next week was part of an ongoing program to improve safety on the stretch and act on the findings of the Kings Highway route safety review.

That review was prompted by five fatalities on the road near Braidwood over one long weekend in 2012.
