It took up just three paragraphs of a chockablock front page, but it certainly foretold of plenty of good times ahead. The small item referred to the House of Representatives getting together to vote on a Public Works Committee report on public baths.

The key recommendation was for the spending of £10,000 on "baths near Telopea Park school'', now known and loved as Manuka Pool. Parliamentarians ushered the spending through, perhaps knowing they would be beneficiaries themselves.
It would be less than a year before the pool was opened in January 31, giving the dry and dusty capital its first public pool. Up until that point, the choices seem to have been the Molonglo River or a pool "at the rear of the powerhouse".
Also on this day, readers could be encouraged by the efforts of the Australian cricket team in a warm-up match before the Ashes. With Don Bradman scoring 78, the Aussies were well on top in their match against Yorkshire before victory was lost to rain.
The Aussies would go on to win the Ashes 2-1. Bradman's scores included 131, 254, 232 and his career-high 334 at Headingley, a score a future Australian captain Mark Taylor would equal but choose not to beat in 1998 when he retired not out.
