Mills had an option in the second year of his contract with championship runners-up the Spurs.
But instead of testing himself at another franchise, Mills has exercised his player option for the 2013-14 season and will fight to be Tony Parker’s back up.
The Spurs went agonisingly close to winning the NBA championship last week, but they squandered a series lead and lost the final two games as the Miami Heat lifted the trophy.
Mills missed the last four games after having surgery on a mystery foot injury.
Mills has played 74 games with the Spurs, averaging 6.2 points in 12.4minutes on the court.
Despite being the leading scorer of all countries at the Olympic Games last year, Mills had to settle into a limited role from the Spurs’ bench when he returned to the NBA.
It’s likely Mills will return to Australia in August to play in his first series under new Boomers coach Andrej Lemanis.
The Boomers will play a double-header with the Australian Opals in Canberra on August 18.
