Braddon has been identified as the most crowded suburb in the ACT. There are 3258 people per square kilometre in the inner-north suburb, according to census data.
Gungahlin suburb Palmerston (2915) was second and Turner (2345) third.
Unlike other capital cities, Canberra's most densely populated suburbs are not all close to the city. Population density is usually higher in areas close to the inner city or close to transport infrastructure.
But in the ACT, outlying suburbs of Dunlop (1987) in Belconnen, Banks (2246) in Tuggeranong and Ngunnawal (2159) in Gungahlin all feature in the top 10. While the inner-south, Woden and Weston Creek all fail to make the list.
But Canberra's suburbs are spacious compared to other capital cities. The inner Sydney suburb of Elizabeth Bay was the most tightly packed community in Australia, with 20,165 residents per square kilometre. Second was next door at Rushcutters Bay (15,221).
Nineteen of the nation's top 20 most densely populated suburbs are located in Sydney. The one exception was Melbourne's Southbank, which ranked 19th, with 8900.
The top Canberra suburbs, while roomy in comparison to Sydney and Melbourne, boast greater density than the most crowded parts of Darwin (2519) and Hobart (3069).
