The 29-year-old was walking along the bike path on the Weston Creek side of Hindmarsh Drive, near the Tuggeranong Parkway underpass, when he was confronted by lone man who demanded he hand over his wallet.
When the victim refused, the offender stabbed the man in the stomach with what appeared to be a pocket knife.
The victim then threw his wallet in front of the offender, who picked it up and ran off. The victim was taken to Canberra Hospital and is in a stable condition.
The robber is described as being Caucasian in appearance and around 30-years-of-age, with a thin build and stubble on his face. He was wearing a white or grey coloured jumper.
In the wake of the stabbing, police have urged people to prioritise safety in situations such as these.
"If a person makes a demand for your wallet or purse and is carrying a weapon, then don't resist. No amount of money or your possessions is worth risking your safety for," Detective Superintendent Brett McCann said.
Police are encouraging anyone who may be able to assist with the investigation to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or via the website at www.act.crimestoppers.com.au.
